The Charleston Museum’s Heyward – Washington House


The National Historic Landmark Heyward – Washington House built in 1772 and is one of two National Historic Landmark Homes operated by the Charleston Museum.  The other one is The Joseph Manigault House was built in 1803. 

The Heyward – Washington House is located at 87 Church Street in historic downtown Charleston.  The Joseph Manigault House is located at 350 Meeting Street in historic downtown Charleston. 

The Heyward – Washington Home also known as “Charleston’s Revolutionary War House” is a Georgian style double house that belonged to the Revolutionary War patriot and signer or the Declaration of Independence Thomas Howard Jr.  George Washington stayed there during his southern tour of 1791.  You will see a magnificent collection of Charleston made furniture including the priceless Holmes Bookcase, considered to be the finest example of American made furniture.  Outbuildings include the fully equipped circa 1740’s kitchen building.  The exquisite formal garden features plans familiar to Charleston in the late 18th century.

The Museum is open daily Monday – Saturday 9 to 5 and Sunday 1 to 5.
The homes are open Monday – Saturday 10 to 5 and Sunday 1 to 5.
